Miguels
Region, Country
Douro, Dao, and Bairrada, Portugal
Vinification
Associated with a long family tradition, since 1926, with properties in the regions of Douro, Dao and Bairrada, they produce high quality wines benefiting from an experienced family team. Their mission is to create inspired wines which reveal complex nuances.
The family believes the vines are symbolic of how they produce their wine: The shape of the vines and its strength represents its integrity, well supported in its roots. "Like the vine, we are part of the nature and we depend on our spirit. When we are connected with nature we feel the present moment with joy and fulfillment. We preserve our energy and we follow our spirit path."
In Douro the vineyards experience large temperature variations, very hot in summer and too cold in winter. This region, particularly mountainous, inhospitable and schist soil, forced the vineyards to generate very limited productions in order to survive in the best conditions. Therefore, in the property of Douro the wines are very concentrated and intense. The vine develops between the river and the mountain, along the various slopes that flank and confluent with the river. This vineyard was first planted in 1845 by Baron of Seixo. It occupies about 200 hectares, a third of which cultivated with vines, classified with the letter A, the highest category in the Douro scale.
The origin of the Dao vineyards comes back to the year 1930. Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro and Encruzado are the main varieties planted here. The Dão region is characterized by soils composed by a great predominance of granite. Its climatic conditions are favorable to the creation of full-bodied and intense flavor wines. The Dão wines have markedly mineral characteristics and are atypical compared to other regions of Portugal.
At the Bairrada vineyards, currently with 130 hectares, 70 of which are planted with vines, is in a region of contrasts. Situated in the central region, characterized by a temperate climate and mainly clay soils. The soils are composed by a first sandy loam layer and another deeper layer of compact clay-calcareous consistency. This feature contributes to the wines and has a distinctly fresh and intense character.
